Lent Reflections Guide

A guide on how to participate in Lent.

At Northshore, we offer suggestions to help you practice Lent for the seven weeks leading up to Easter. We’re starting Sunday, February 27, with Sundays marking the beginning of each week. Our reflections and practices will be based on the book of Exodus. Mondays will supplement your understanding of Exodus through videos prepared by The Bible Project. Wednesdays are designed around applying the sermon to your life. Fridays will offer a spiritual discipline that you can practice during the weekend to further grow spiritually.

To get the most out of this experience you will want to find a quiet place that will allow you to focus. Most of the videos or devotionals will take 5-10 minutes If you are new to or struggle with spiritual practices that require quiet reflection, keep your time short. Consistency is more important than the length of time. If you are comfortable or familiar with times of quiet reflection, give yourself enough time to not feel rushed. Some people find pen and paper nearby helpful to jot down their thoughts. This could look like a list of words on a scrap of paper or sentences compiled in a journal. Do (or don’t do) what helps you practice and stay consistent.

Finally, while it would be great to do everything in this guide, you don’t have to, and if you need to skip something that’s totally okay. Each day’s guide can stand on its own, and you can join in at any point. Similarly, if you discover a particular practice that God is speaking to you through, feel free to do that every week. The goal is an intentional time to check in with yourself and share those findings in meaningful conversation with God.

Getting Started

As we begin this season, we are reminded of Eugene Peterson’s paraphrase of Jesus’ words in Matthew 11:28-30:

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

We look forward to journeying together as we learn the unforced rhythms of grace as we renew our commitment to Jesus through this season of reflection.
