Message

Fasting

In the practice of fasting, we learn to intentionally deny ourselves in order to be more aware of and reliant on God’s presence.

Fasting traditionally involves going without food for a period of time and instead using that time for prayer and scripture reading. Fasting can also involve setting aside forms of entertainment or other distraction. You may choose to stay off social media, not watch television or streaming services, or go without your phone for a period of time.

Crawl
Choose a meal to fast this week. Rather than eating, set the time aside to pray and reflect on Romans 12:2. What habits, experiences, or relationships have formed you? How are they forming you now? What is a step you could take to make progress in being formed after the example of Jesus?

Walk
Choose one day this week to fast from something during the daylight hours (food, entertainment, social media, etc.). Use the time you would have spent on those things reading through 1 John. Continue to ask God to illuminate the influences that are forming you spiritually. Are they drawing you closer to Jesus or further away?

Run
Choose to skip some form of media this week (Netflix, news, sports, social media, etc.). Reflect on how these influences are forming you spiritually. What practices or habits could you develop to help form you after the example of Jesus?
