08 Nov 2018 Toy Shop
By Tim King – Pastor for Community Outreach |
The leaves are falling and we’re smelling pumpkin spice everywhere … that means its Toy Shop time! If you’re new to Northshore, Toy Shop is our annual all-church effort to sacrificially love and serve families in need within our community. We partner with local schools and nonprofits to identify families who might not otherwise have gifts to give their children at Christmas, then we throw a festive event where parents can receive gifts for their kids.
Toy Shop will happen on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7 and 8. Friday night is smaller and primarily for families sent by our social services partners, while Saturday is bigger and for families from local schools.
If you’ve participated in previous Toy Shops, you might notice some intentional differences this year. Instead of aiming to be bigger, with more families, toys, and volunteers, we are going to be more personal by connecting deeper with our guest families. Our hope is that many of the guest families will return to Northshore on a Sunday, or connect through our children and youth programs. We are organizing our volunteer roles to make it easier and more natural to have spiritual conversations with guests; we believe our good deeds create good will, and good will is a great platform for sharing the good news of Jesus. And Jesus is the best gift anyone can receive!
Many people have told me that Toy Shop is a highlight of their year and that they look forward with great anticipation to participating. This year our goal is to keep the relationships from Toy Shop going year-round. This will give us the chance to minister to these families beyond Christmastime. You can join in by giving a toy (you can find the Shopping List here) and by signing up for a Toy Shop volunteer position here.
