Our Small Group Is:

by Lydia Harris

Small group members were asked to answer the question, “Our small group is…” They agreed that small groups are powerful places where you can:

1) Grow spiritually: “We joined a small group right away when we were new at Northshore because we believe God blesses and strengthens believers through the principal of iron sharpens iron. As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17). In our group, we have seen others suffer and be tested and have been strengthened as we watched them persevere in their faith during hardships. If we were not in a small group, we would miss out on the encouraging Christian fellowship we enjoy.”

2) Pray for one another: “My husband and I are grateful that we joined a small group several years ago. When both of us were diagnosed with serious, incurable medical conditions, we asked Gary Stabbert, our group leader, and the overseers, to pray over us. Members of our small group also came to support us and join in prayer. They prayed for God to hold back our illnesses. Now, more than three-and-a-half years later, our health is pretty stable and our illnesses have not progressed at the predicted rate. We are thankful that we can ask for prayer from our group and know they will pray. We have seen other very specific answers to their prayers on our behalf. To God be the glory.”

3) Develop friendships: “What I like about our small group is the intimacy of knowing a small group of believers who genuinely care for one another, pray for one another, and encourage one another to grow spiritually.”

4) Receive support and blessings: “Our small group is such a support. God has blessed me beyond words. Since I’m a widow, the group has helped fill a big void in my life.”

5) Feel accepted: “Attending a small group is important to me. Our church is large, and the small group has given me a place to develop close friendships and feel like I belong. I feel welcomed, accepted, and like I fit in. I also appreciate that we pray for each other. I am encouraged to see God work through our prayers and answer them. I am blessed to open my home to our group.”

6) Grow in friendships: “We like being in a small group because it gives us the opportunity to study God’s word and go deeper into it so we understand it more. Also, we appreciate the fellowship with other Christians as we pray with them about their specific needs and have them pray for our needs.”

7) Serve and grow: “I am thankful for our small group because it gives me the opportunity to love and to serve my brothers and sisters in Christ. By meeting weekly, I have the privilege of being part of an intimate gathering of followers of Jesus whose desire is to be the hands and feet of Jesus—not only to one another, but in our community as well. We have prayed, laughed, cried, and knelt together as we shared our lives, our burdens, and our joys. My faith is stronger and growing deeper as I see the Lord work in my life and the lives of each person in our small group. God is on the move in small groups! I would highly recommend that if you aren’t in a small group, find one and experience what church is all about!”
