Helping At-Risk Kids

By Tim King, Pastor for Local Outreach

Northshore Community Church has been partnering with the Northshore School District in various ways for over 10 years, from annual events like Community Serve Day and Toy Shop and Care Day to providing weekly volunteers in schools across the district. The District has told us how much they appreciate our partnership. Our persistent and faithful service has led the District to invite us to “adopt” a local school, Woodmoor Elementary (just east across the 405 from Northshore).

Woodmoor is a large, diverse school serving a wide variety of students and families. Among many needs at the school, the principal has asked that we start this partnership by creating a tutoring program for academically at-risk children, focusing on core skills in reading and math. Numerous studies point to the vital importance of mastery of these educational building blocks and how that mastery relates to the future success (or not) of young people; we are being asked to engage to make a lasting difference in a young person’s life.

We are being asked to engage to make a lasting difference in a young person’s life.

For the past month a, small group of volunteers has been piloting the tutoring program with school staff, learning what will help Northshore volunteers succeed at being tutors. And we’ve been having so much fun along the way!

You are invited to join us and change a young person’s life. You can learn more by attending informational meetings on Sunday Jan 13th in the Baker Room, at 9:30am or 11:00am. You can also learn more at or by contacting
