God Called Us Out of Comfort

By Faith Gibson

Three years ago, I asked my husband, Chris, if he’d ever considered moving out of Florida. I’ll never forget the look of both shock and confusion on his face when he immediately responded, “Why? Where on earth would we go?” At the time, I had no idea either. But what I did know for certain was that the Lord had begun stirring convictions and desires within me that I couldn’t yet put into words.

Chris was born and raised on the west coast beaches of Florida while I grew up on the other side of the country, in the pine-covered foothills of Northern California. We met in Bible college nearly ten years ago, dated long distance for almost three years, got engaged, and a few months later I moved out to Florida where we were married on a beautiful April day on the white sand beaches.

We assumed the Lord would keep us there indefinitely, not at all expecting that He might have a completely different plan for our family.

We quickly got comfortable with exciting plans and hopes for our future together in Florida as we got involved with Chris’ home church, where he was also employed for many years. We assumed the Lord would keep us there indefinitely, not at all expecting that He might have a completely different plan for our family. But soon, we’d find out that He did.

The year after I had asked Chris that shocking question, we began to intentionally pray about it together, not only asking the Lord to align our hearts and minds on the matter as a couple, but also asking for wisdom and direction regarding the somewhat strange convictions that I experienced. During that time, the Lord began to put the Pacific Northwest/Seattle area on our hearts, a region that I had visited once before as a young child and Chris had never visited at all. After taking two brief trips over two years, we knew that the Lord was, in fact, moving us out of Florida into a whole new realm full of many unknowns.

Our prayers began to shift, as we prayed about our needs to the Lord, knowing full well that He was calling us to rely upon Him more than ever before, since we didn’t have any family in the area, no job prospects in mind, or even an exact city to claim. We needed God to go before us and provide every need we had, if He was truly leading us out there. And let me tell you, He absolutely did—exceedingly and abundantly.

And we now know more intimately that there is no sweeter way to live our lives than to rely upon Him for everything in life.

This past April, two weeks before we left Florida, the Lord provided a beautiful and affordable rental home for us here in Kirkland. And only days before arriving in Kirkland, the Lord provided – all in one day – a church and community for our family, as well as a job for Chris here at Northshore serving as Communication Project Manager. The Lord truly went before us and provided.

Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Our family now firmly believes the Lord doesn’t simply call us to live comfortably, but rather calls us to live with arms wide open in surrender to His will and purposes, because there is never the need to rely upon God if we continually live our lives in only the safe, familiar, and comfortable places. And we now know more intimately that there is no sweeter way to live our lives than to rely upon Him for everything in life.

Our hearts’ desire is to live with arms wide open to the Lord, no matter what. So thank you, Northshore, for welcoming our family with open arms. We are so very glad to be here with all of you!
